[ prolly cuz Ore is too nice to see him as pathetic. ]
man all you forge people must have a secret manual of all the right phrases to say to people, that's so nice of you.
okay I'll be there!
[ and he arrives with ham/bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwiches for breakfast along with drinks because he's super prepared here, but he'll shuffle his stuff to be able to knock politely. ]
[ offers some of the items to him gratefully with a laugh. ]
No way! If you think that, it means you just deserve it more often. This is totally normal stuff. [ looks very proud of himself, though, over this simple gratitude-comboed-with-a-compliment. it's definitely like looking at a little kid that just got praise from the adults or a puppy for getting a compliment on their behavior/actions. his expression relaxes into something more neutral though. Sam is a simple creature: he wants to help and be quietly noticed sometimes (nothing big, it has to be small acknowledgements) not for the recognition itself but to know he's doing it right and continuing to do so is okay. ]
How are you doing? Been mostly peaceful for you, I hope.
[ affectionately on top of the teasing: ] I hope to be half as good-looking as you when I get to your age, you know.
I'm okay, I got lucky and missed the ordeal. The rest of Cirrus, well ... pretty sure they're more traumatized by the healing baths' requirements than the injuries and experience they went through to end up there. [ he wishes this was a joke. ]
My guess is they can pretend to not perceive the performance and what they went through, but not pretend they weren't being perceived by those around them and what was going through their heads. They act tough, but they aren't secret agents or anything, they're very normal individuals.
I wish I could help them more, but... I try to do what I can without making them feel like it's too obvious. I'm not close to them, but they did seem to be doing okay and distracting each other. Maybe they bonded a bit over everything. It was pretty cute.
Thank you. [ looks very happy about his invitation. He's going to reach for one of the sandwiches to eat, humming thoughtfully. ]
Actually, that is reminds me... I had two questions about some woodworking.
The first is that when I was a kid I was more into it, and I learned to make these flowers that I keep around with me and give to people from time to time. But someone gave me a really nice compliment on them the other day and I wanted to make more for them as a result. The problem is... I don't really remember how to do it, nevermind if I can do it here on the ship. If I showed you do you think you might be able to help?
I actually didn't bring one with me but I got a few, still. Mostly... I feel like there's a better way to do them, than I did?
The petals are very thin strip slices, I think... uhm reminds me of like how you might peel the skin off an apple, actually-! rather than carved out of wood traditionally, but since they are old they splinter sometimes. It seems better on the boat, like they are more resilient to handling, maybe there's more moisture...? Not sure, it doesn't seem like I sealed them very well or anything.
Also, I was wondering if you could help me make a wood-puzzle music box kit for Jewel? I tried to convince him to make one with me, but he wasn't very confident in his ability to do it, or he wasn't that interested in committing since he's probably too busy. But, I think if I made him a kit he could work on it in his own time, and he would really enjoy it and feel more confident about his abilities elsewhere than music.
I made a design already, but actually sanding the wood and getting the right thicknesses and precision so it will work seamlessly for him will be really hard for me on my own. And I'm worried he'll take it badly against himself if it doesn't work properly rather than understand it it would be a result of my lack of skill.
[listening and nodding along as Sam explains, smiling at the the end of it. It's cute he wants to make something for Jewel]
Hooh, that's not a bad way to do it - might be moisture, might just be the way ya cut 'em, too. But I can show ya how to seal 'em so they stay that way, 'course.
An' hell yeah I'll help ya make somethin' for Jewel, too. I think he is busy, but havin' stuff like that to do would do him some good - s'real thoughtful of ya to wanna do somethin' like that, Sam.
And, haha, is it? I guess I just got the vibe from him that he would benefit from something like it but any kinks in the process would really not be therapeutic for him. And I'm always excited for an excuse to get better at something so I get a benefit too. So probably not that thoughtful, afterall ...
Ehhh, there's nothin' wrong with gettin' somethin' like that out of doin' a nice thing for someone else. Used to make stuff for my mentor all the time just to get better at doin' it.

Ore is waiting at the door to answer it, both eyebrows shooting up in surprise. He holds out a hand to offer to take some of it]
Damn, yer really spoilin' me this mornin'.

Nah, I don't deserve it or nothin', but it is nice.
[but he's taking those items and leading them over to somewhere to sit]
Mostly, yeah. It's usually pretty peaceful 'round here. But I'm doin' all right - all healed up an' everythin'.

Ohh, good to hear it! You look way better like this, too.

Just a lil' bit better, my old ugly mug didn't get fixed. [he's joking] How're you an' Cirrus doin?

Well that's nice of ya to say.
[. . . Cirrus being traumatized by that does seem to make sense tbh]
Mmm . . . some folks would rather go through shit like what happened in the game than share their feelings. 'Specially when it's like that.
But 'm sure yer doin' yer best. Sometimes support is all someone needs, y'know? [tilts his head] You're not close?

[ shakes his head. ] I'm closest with Uncle Lou because he lives with Aunt Lucy back home.

Yeah, absolutely. I gotta see 'bout gettin' more wood anyway, but if ya can describe 'em then we can figure out how ya made 'em so you can make more.
